It’s Another Happy Sun-Shiny Friday on Sanibel

While we continue to enjoy blue skies and mostly sunshiny weather on the island, yesterday was the 22nd anniversary of Hurricane Charley’s arrival on Sanibel.

The lessons learned from the results of that storm are what convinced me to open my own brokerage in Oct 2024 so that my team could provide service more for our clients.

It helped that we had sold $34M that year before leaving VIP to move to Sanibel Square. Much has changed on the islands since then and in this real estate business.

Florida Realtors 2026 Convention, Trade Show, & Meetings

Next week is Florida Realtors 2026 Convention, Trade Show, and Governance Meetings. Those may now be attended in person and virtually.
As I prepared for my “Broker Tips & Tales” pitch yesterday at the local Association of Realtors, I looked up my activity history at the state meetings.
At Florida Realtors, I have been appointed to and served on 52 committees, subcommittees, forums. Also worked as an Education Ambassador at conventions, and for many years was a panelist twice annually for their Audition Panel for new instructors looking to be approved to teach FR classes.
I have great professional Realtor contacts throughout the state.

Sanibel & Captiva Islands Association of Realtors

The August/September issue of the island “Real Estate Guide” came out this week.

The Open Caravan Meeting yesterday at the islands Association of Realtors was well attended with both new sales and listings announced plus a condo open after the meeting for easy Caravan viewing.

I got good feedback from my “Broker Tips & Tales” presentation. The tales intertwined beginning with some history about my 25-year marine engineering career, getting my first real estate license in VA in 1989, and then being a Florida Realtor for 34 years (& counting).
With the Sanibel/Captiva Islands Association of Realtors, I volunteered early-on and have worked on 53 committees, including chairing 12 of them. I also was elected to their Board of Directors and served for five years, including when President in 1999.
The connections made during these experiences have served me well and produced some of the tales behind the tips I shared yesterday. The tips were:
  1. Always be kind & honest
  2. Know your value & don’t renegotiate commissions to save sales.
  3. Get involved with leadership at our local & state Realtor organizations & use our Affiliates.
  4. Don’t charge another Realtor a referral fee, instead refer business to professionals you know & trust.
The next group meeting is the August membership meeting with Caravan on the 27th with guest speaker from Ding Darling Wildlife Society.
