Sam Bailey’s Island Night 2026

As another week ends and high season wraps up, it is time for the 33rd Annual Sam Bailey’s Island Night which offers free tickets to the community. Organized by the SanCap Chamber of Commerce, the event is tonight at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers where the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels will play the Tampa Tarpons. The gates open at 5:45 p.m. with a pregame parade at 5:50 showcasing island businesses and organizations. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. and the evening will close out with the first-ever drone show done at the stadium. Tickets are available on-line at Sam Bailey’s Islands Night

Critter Update

There were interesting wildlife reports by SCCF (Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation) this week:

Bald Eagles – Sanibel and Captiva experienced another highly successful nesting season with a total of 13 eaglets fledged so far, the highest count on record. Bald eagle nesting season runs from Oct 1 through May 15 in Florida, though some nests may be active longer if the young have not yet fledged.

Ospreys – Since young ospreys began to take flight, at least 43 have fledged on the islands. Ospreys lay an average of three eggs that hatch after 5-6 weeks of incubation. Then after 6-8 weeks, the chicks will start to stretch their wings and fly. Adult ospreys have bright yellow eyes, while osprey chicks hatch with red eyes that lighten to orange by the time they learn how to fly. Fledglings also have white tips on the ends of their brown feathers, in contrast to adults which are solid dark brown.

Sea Turtles – As nesting sea turtle season begins; a total of eight loggerhead nests have been documented. The first three were near Blind Pass. The next three were on Sanibel’s West End too. This week, the first nests on Captiva and Sanibel’s East End also were spotted. Unfortunately three nests were depredated by coyotes before SCCF teams arrived to apply screens to deter them. From May through July SCCF Turtle Patrol is out looking for nests.

Sanibel & Captiva Islands Association of Realtors

There was no Association of Realtors caravan meeting this week, but yesterday was the 29th Annual RPAC Golf Tournament and Auction at The Sanctuary. Thanks to all who made it a success!

Island Real Estate Scoop

Looking at the residential real estate activity posted in the SanCap MLS, since last Friday, there have been 10 new sales posted: four Captiva condos, four Sanibel homes, and two Sanibel condos.

During the same time, there were nine new residential listings and 15 price changes. Once again, there were almost as many new listings as new sales, so inventory remains very high.

Wondering what is selling? Of the 106 closed year-to-date Sanibel home sales, 32 are on canals. Of the 47 closed Sanibel condo sales, 31 are in complexes that are open with full amenities and allow short-term rentals.

Below, with data from the island MLS are summary tables of the residential sales statistics, followed by an update about our listings, plus the details of the MLS action reported this week.
