A Few Hours Without Internet = More Time to Enjoy Sunshine

Sorry for the delay, just as I had this ready to go out at 2 p.m., Xfinity went out on the island. Got it back at 5 p.m.

We are wrapping another week of wonderful weather on sunny Sanibel. Temperatures dropped a tad yesterday after a little shower at sunset Wed night. It doesn’t get any better than the low to mid-70-degrees F in February. Appreciated by not just locals, but also the many island workers and visitors, more of the same is expected for the next week – and “yes”, we sometimes feel guilty when we hear from friends and family up north amid snow and freezing temps.

There are plenty of vacancies for those wanting to also enjoy this weather, with more and more opening all the time.

13th Annual “Ding” Darling & Doc Ford’s Tarpon Tournament – is coming up on May 9.

SCCF Christmas Bird Count – posted this week by the Conservation Foundation: “Christmas Bird Count results are in. 12,401 birds from 100 different species were recorded on Sanibel and Captiva as part of our local contribution to the National Audubon Society’s 125th Christmas Bird Count! In addition to being our highest count  total since 2020, this year had some highly unexpected sightings, including a burrowing owl on Captiva and a snow goose on Sanibel! Our three most frequently observed species were snowy egret, white ibis, and fish crow. Thanks to our 100+ volunteers and partners at the Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society and J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge who contributed to this important community science effort. Our data will be combined with other Christmas Bird Counts throughout the western hemisphere, furthering scientists’ understanding of the long-term health and status of bird populations.”

Taste of The Islands – CROW’s annual fundraiser is just days away – on March 1 on the grounds of Sanibel City Hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More info at TasteOfTheIslands.org. Tickets available on Eventbrite. Sanibel & Captiva Islands Real Estate

Yesterday, at the islands Association of Realtors monthly Membership Meeting, guest speakers were Sanibel Fire Chief Kevin Barbot and Sanibel Police Chief Bill Dalton. Following the meeting, a Caravan of newly listed properties were open for viewing – 14 Sanibel homes and one Sanibel condo.

For years these caravan meetings were Thursday mornings at 8:30 a.m., changing from bi-weekly to weekly, usually in November, when the number of new listings increased. A maximum of 15 properties were allowed on Caravan and the locations alternated between East End and West End because of the additional travel time needed “in season”. That all changed following the hurricanes with meeting times changed to 11 a.m. due to heavy contractor traffic.

Our MLS Committee recently reviewed a member survey. As a result, Caravan meetings will be changing again to weekly and alternating between east and west (the dividing line is Rabbit Rd), but with the maximum number of properties being reduced from 15 to 10. Those changes are not only because of the many new listings, but to compensate for the traffic and encourage more attendance.

An East End Caravan is scheduled for next Thursday at 11 a.m. with Open House Caravan of new listings beginning at noon.
