I think I’ve boasted too many times lately about how wonderful the Sanibel fall weather has been. It sure changed this week. After a nice Monday, on Tuesday afternoon a quick heavy shower was a prelude to what Wednesday would bring. That was when the rain came down in buckets with winds up to 50 mph. Three island transformers blew, and 1300 island properties lost power. LCEC (Lee County Electric Co-op) was quick to restore though; they really are terrific.
Sunshine is peeking through today amid a few clouds and as we look forward to the upcoming holiday week, temperatures again may get into the low 80’s, with only occasional chances of rain. Thanksgiving Day is forecast as partly cloudy and 77 degrees F.
Even during the bad weather, causeway crews were hustling to meet their goal of roads/bridges done by year-end. Starting at 7 p.m. tonight, causeway traffic again will be limited to 1-lane until 6 a.m. Monday morning. Flaggers will be directing the 2-way traffic. Whether coming or going from now through Dec, it pays to plan on it taking additional time.
Holiday Events & Re-openings
Thanksgiving Dinner & Butterfly Release is going on now at The Community House with singers from the BIG ARTS Community Chorus also performing (not this alto though, work prevails).
Lions Club Christmas Tree Sale – is next Fri, Sat, Sun, Nov 24-26 at The Community House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sanibel Masters Art Festival – is indoors at The Community House next Fri & Sat, Nov 24 & 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sanibel Café – reopening Dec 1.
Sanibel Beach Recovery Project
The start of the City’s Hurricane Ian Beach Recovery & Resilience Project is now expected to begin Dec 13, with completion by Apr 15, 2024. Sand will be trucked to the island and placed along the open beach, primarily between the mean-high water line and the existing dune vegetation line and to fill accessible gullies/washouts that occurred as the storm surge receded. Once complete, the beach profile will be close to pre-hurricane beach conditions. The final implementation plan will be developed once the contractor is selected.
Sanibel & Captiva Islands Real Estate News
Though the Association of Realtors® didn’t meet this week, The SanibelSusan Team was busy as were many colleagues. I met clients Mon. teammate Dave and I both showed property Tues, while Wed was an inspection day. Yesterday, between more showings, we both fielded buyer and seller calls. Tomorrow, we both will be showing again. It is nice to be busy, but ole Hurricane Ian sure continues to create new challenges.
Below, with data from the islands MLS (Multiple Listing Service), are summary tables of the residential sales statistics, followed the island MLS action this week.
The number of condo listings continues to grow, but there were no condo sales this week. Sanibel single-family homes remain the top commodity, with canal-front the best seller. There already have been 25 sales in Shell Harbor alone.
On the commercial side, it was posted in MLS that The Anchor Inn at 1245 Periwinkle is under contract. Asking price $3.5M.
I also heard this week that the Sanibel Marina again sold. Maybe that’s why Gramma Dot’s sign says their reopening has been delayed until the end of the month, Still need to confirm that sale rumor.
