Another week, another hurricane. It certainly was not fun awaiting the landfall of Hurricane Idalia. Though the islands came through with mostly just minor flooding, the anticipation and storm preparations were stressful.
During teammate Dave’s travels today, he noted that standing water remains in many areas, particularly the west end. The City reports that the public beach parking areas remain closed at Lighthouse Beach and Turner Beach on Captiva.
With bright blue sky and plenty of sunshine, I decided to do another island drive-around myself. I also saw partial flooding in a few locations, but what was most surprising was the lack of vehicles on the road and few workers at properties. I took the back way from the east end to the end of West Gulf Dr and back, circling through a few neighborhoods.
I bet I didn’t have five vehicles pass me going the opposite direction. If work vehicles and equipment are an indication, not much happening at most properties. Continued roof work was obvious, however, at some of the same complexes mentioned last week: Seashells, Sand Dollar, Sandpebble, and Sunset South. Below are a few photos I snapped along the way:

Sanibel River aka the Panama Canal between Middle Gulf Dr & Beachview.

There is no doubt that it is going to take many months before most complexes will be ready for occupancy. Here’s hoping that recovery progress picks up soon!
Bridge/Causeway Update
Some storm washouts meant additional causeway work both yesterday and today with traffic limited to one-lane as repairs are underway on the island closest to the big bridge and the mainland.
On a lighter note, several photographs were posted on social media Wednesday morning, as the storm passed, showing a flamboyance of flamingos on a causeway beach. Those birds being here definitely is an oddity, as flamingos are rarely seen in this part of Florida.
