We have had a busy week at SanibelSusan Realty. The island is filling up nicely and we had a little more showing activity with our listings. Have seen no offers in several weeks, but still have noted an increased interest in island real estate. Expect to see good action the first couple of weeks of November too. Already have received several advance showing appointment calls. We had no Realtor Caravan this week, but beginning next Thursday, we go back to our winter schedule of weekly (except holiday weeks).
Here are some news tidbits, followed by the MLS activity of the week.
Boost in Florida’s Consumer Confidence
Florida REALTORS® made a midweek announcement about a new University of Florida survey. It reported that historically low interest rates, bargains on condominiums, and a moratorium on foreclosures likely caused a jump in Florida’s consumer confidence in October. The biggest increase was in perceptions about whether it’s a good time to buy big-ticket consumer items. The rise was particularly marked among seniors. A likely cause of an increase in consumer confidence overall is the effect of the temporary moratorium on foreclosures and the possibility of delaying foreclosures as a result of the news that banks may be vulnerable in not following procedures in the filing of paperwork when buying and selling mortgages. The increase in confidence comes amid mixed economic news about employment, housing, tax revenue and tourism revenue. The latest unemployment figures, which were just released, show Florida’s jobless rate in September was up to 11.9 percent from a revised August figure of 11.8 percent – far above the national unemployment rate of 9.6 percent.
Sanibel Beach Parking Permits
These permits will no longer be sold at the Sanibel Police Department, but instead at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 San-Cap Road. Permits can now be purchased seven days a week, anytime the rec center is open. The new permits are good through Nov 30, 2011. “A” stickers, for residents and property owners, are $12. “B” stickers, for non-residents and non-owners, are $90. Auto registrations and proof of residency/property ownership/driver’s license required.
New Requirements for Serving on a Florida Condo Board
With many condo association annual meetings just around the corner, prospective new board members should know that the FL Division of Condominium Associations, Timeshares, and Mobile Homes has instituted an educational requirement as a method of qualifying to serve on an association board. Newly elected board members may take a division-approved educational curriculum or state in writing that they have read certain documents in order to qualify for board service. Edison State College’s Collier Campus has conducted the Community Association Officers’ Forum for 12 years. In addition to the forum sessions that address issues of importance to community association officers and board members, this year’s sessions will each include one hour of the educational programs necessary to fulfill the new certification requirements.
